Breaking News, National
A two-day long ‘Training for Local Level Actors on Climate Change Project Proposal Development for Accessing International Climate Funds’ was organized by the Economic Relations Division (ERD), supported by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, at Hotel Pan Pacific Sonargaon, Dhaka recently. Bangladesh is expected to graduate from the status of a Least Developed Country (LDC) by 2026. Achievements in economic development are, however, at risk from the impact of climate change. According to the Global Climate Risk Index (CRI) 2020, Bangladesh ranks 7th among the 10 countries most affected by extreme weather events. Adapting to climate change is thus vital to the country’s development. The training has been developed and conducted by the Centre for Climate...

Budget Reaction 2022-23: Budget to Make Tobacco Products More Affordable and Increase Health Risk

Breaking News, National
The proposed budget for FY 2022-23, if finally adopted and realized, will increase the use of cigarettes and other tobacco products among the poor and the youth. It will deprive the government of additional revenue and, at the same time, hike health expenditure. As the proposed budget has kept the supplementary duty unchanged and failed to introduce a specific tax system, the opportunity for tobacco companies to exponentially expand their profit remains wide open. Speakers said this today (18 June 2022, Saturday) during a post-budget press conference, jointly organized by PROGGA (Knowledge for Progress) and Anti-Tobacco Media Alliance (ATMA) held at the Nasrul Hamid Auditorium of the Dhaka Reporters Unity. The event was supported by the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids (CTFK). It was info...

Cigarettes fall in real price due to inflation and per capita income: Webinar speakers

Breaking News, National
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has announced to make the country tobacco-free by 2040. To this end, the government has included tobacco control in the Eighth Five-Year Plan. However, in the webinar titled 'Tobacco Tax in the Budget FY 2022-2023: Expectations and Achievements' organized by Dhaka Ahsania Mission Health Sector on the afternoon of June 12, those concerned feel that the proposed budget announced in the National Assembly is an obstacle in building a tobacco-free Bangladesh. In addition, the increase in the price of tobacco products in the proposed budget is also disappointing. Because if we compare inflation and per capita income, we can see that the real price of cigarettes has come down. The webinar was hosted by Iqbal Masud, Director, Health and WASH Sector, Dhaka Ahsania Mi...

Proposed Budget to Decrease Tobacco Products’ Real Prices and Hike Use among the Poor and the Youth

Proposed Budget to Decrease Tobacco Products’ Real Prices and Hike Use among the Poor and the Youth

Breaking News, National
The proposed budget, if finally adopted and realized, will increase the use of tobacco products among the poor and the youth. It will hike health expenditure and deprive the government of additional revenue. The proposed budget for FY 2022-23 failed to take into account any of the demands raised by anti-tobacco organizations, and is in grave conflict with the Honorable Prime Minister's vision for a tobacco-free Bangladesh. The proposed budget raises the price for 10 sticks of low-tier cigarettes by only Tk. 1, setting the price at Tk. 40. It shows only a 2.56 percent increase in this tier. Such an increase is negligible considering the fact that the National Per Capita Income (Nominal) has increased by nearly 10 percent. As a result of this budgetary measure, the real price of cigarettes w...
