Fine of BDT 5.58 Crores & 106 Brick Kilns Closed: Factory Sealed with 100 Tons of Polythene Today

Under the special directives of the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, the Department of Environment conducted mobile court drives across the country from January 2 to January 16, 2025, to curb environmental pollution. During this period, 123 mobile courts handled 323 cases, imposing fines amounting to BDT 5,58,36,700. Activities of 76 illegal brick kilns were stopped by dismantling chimneys, 30 brick kilns were instructed to cease operations, and raw bricks from 7 kilns were destroyed. Additionally, equipment for melting lead/batteries from 5 factories (carried in 6 trucks) was confiscated, and these factories were shut down.

From November 3, 2024, to date, 238 mobile courts were conducted nationwide to prevent the production and distribution of banned polythene. A total fine of BDT 32,89,800 was collected from 480 establishments, approximately 75,802 kg of banned polythene was confiscated, and 7 factories were sealed and disconnected from utility services.

On January 16, mobile courts in Mymensingh, Narayanganj, and Dhaka’s Kamrangirchar area imposed fines of BDT 17,500 through 9 cases. Three factories were sealed, electric meters were confiscated, utility connections were cut off, and approximately 100 tons of polythene were seized. Around 2,005 kg of polythene was also confiscated nationwide.

On the same day, 4 mobile courts in Satkhira, Nilphamari, Madaripur, and Gazipur imposed fines of BDT 17 lakhs in 8 cases and shut down 4 illegal brick kilns. In Mymensingh, a mobile court aimed at noise pollution fined one vehicle driver BDT 500 and issued warnings to others.

The Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, along with the Department of Environment, will continue such drives to combat environmental pollution.
