
The Department of Public Health and Informatics (DPHI), Bangladesh Medical University (BMU), successfully organized the Strategic Coordination Meeting on Smart Hospital System Development and Implementation under the Smart Hospital Pilot Initiative on 11 June 2026 at BMU.
The Smart Hospital Pilot Initiative, supported by the Organization of the Islamic World for Education, Science and Culture (ICESCO), aims to transform BMU into a digitally integrated, AI-enabled healthcare institution through the introduction of Hospital Management Systems (HMS), Electronic Medical Records (EMR), Internet of Things (IoT)-based monitoring, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and digital health solutions. As a pilot initiative, the project focuses on the Departments of Internal Medicine (OPD and IPD), Clinical Oncology, Cardiology (CCU), and Anesthesia, Analgesia and Intensive Care Medicine (ICU), with a long-term vision of scaling up the system across the university.
The meeting was presided over by Prof. Dr. Syed Md. Akram Hussain, Chairman, Department of Clinical Oncology, BMU. The meeting commenced with a welcome address by Prof. Dr. Md. Atiqul Haque, Chairman, Department of Public Health and Informatics (DPHI) and Dean, Faculty of Preventive and Social Medicine, BMU.
Dr. Farzana Islam Rupa, Member Secretary, Technical Advisory and Steering Committee, Smart Hospital Pilot Initiative and BMU Coordinator for ICESCO Affairs, conducted the meeting and presented the project overview, implementation progress, departmental assessment findings, and future roadmap. Prof. Dr. Md. Taufiq Hasan, Head, Department of Biomedical Engineering, BUET, presented the technical aspects of the project with inputs from Mr. Awsaf Rahman, Biomedical Engineer, BUET, and Mr. Sayed Sadman Sabbir, Biomedical Engineer, BUET.
Prof. Dr. Syed Md. Akram Hussain, Prof. Dr. Md. Atiqul Haque and Dr. Din-E-Mujahid Md. Faruque Osmany, Associate Professor, Department of Cardiology emphasized the importance of strong collaboration and a unified, interoperable system for successful implementation. Md. Maruf Hossain, System Analyst, IT Cell, BMU, provided technical insights on software implementation.
Valuable recommendations were provided by Dr. Md. Saidul Haque, Assistant Professor, Department of Clinical Oncology; Dr. Md. Shahidul Hoque, Assistant Professor, Department of Cardiology; and Dr. Amirul Islam, Associate Professor, Department of Anesthesia, Analgesia and Intensive Care Medicine. The meeting was also attended by Dr. Kazi Ali Aftab, Assistant Professor, Department of Internal Medicine; Dr. Khandakar Fatema, Lecturer, DPHI; and Dr. Sayeda Sumaiya Efa, Lecturer, DPHI.
The meeting concluded with a collective commitment from BMU, DPHI, BUET, and the participating departments to advance the Smart Hospital Initiative and position BMU as a national leader in digital health transformation.
