Yunus Chairs the Vatican Declaration on Human Fraternity

Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus traveled to Rome on June 9th, 2023, to attend the Vatican Meeting on Human Fraternity at Vatican City, upon the invitation of Pope Francis. Thirty Nobel Peace Laureates, individuals, and organizations gathered in Vatican City to formulate 'The Declaration of Human Fraternity.' Yunus was involved in drafting the Declaration and chaired the committee in finalizing it. On June 10th, the Declaration of Human Fraternity was announced at St. Peter's Square in Rome in front of the general public. Pope Francis was scheduled to receive the Declaration from Professor Yunus after he had read it out in a public ceremony at St. Peter's Square. Demands for Effective Price Hike in the Final Budget

The proposed national budget for FY 2023-24, if adopted, will once again render tobacco products cheaper than essential commodities. This will raise tobacco-related illness and deaths, deprive the government of the opportunity to earn additional revenue, and only benefit tobacco companies. Implementation of trans-fat limiting regulation crucial to ensure food standards

There is no alternative to ensuring food standards to safeguard public health. The risk of various non-communicable diseases including heart disease is growing increasingly in Bangladesh due to excessive amount of trans fat in food, which is alarming. Youth Reaction on National Budget FY 2023-24: Context Tobacco Tax

Although the price of tobacco products has been increased in the proposed budget, the youth feel that the rate of price increase is disappointing. They say that this budget is an obstacle to creating a tobacco-free young society and creating a tobacco-free country by 2040 as announced by the Prime Minister. Currently, 75 percent of the cigarette market is occupied by the lower level whose main consumers are mainly the poor and young people. A price hike of 50 paise per low-end cigarette will not discourage the poor and young population from taking up cigarettes. Because per capita income growth and price inflation are taken into account, cigarette prices have decreased in real terms compared to previous years. Budget to Increase Tobacco Use and Health Expenditure

The proposed national budget for FY 2023-24, if adopted, will once again make tobacco products cheaper than essential commodities. It will encourage the youth into using tobacco products, increase tobacco-related deaths and illness, and therefore spike the public health expenditure of the government. The proposed budget, being at odds with the proposals of anti-tobacco activists, will cause the government to lose the chances of earning additional revenues and will also hinder the realization of a tobacco-free Bangladesh, as envisioned by the Honorable Prime Minister.
