Demands for Effective Price Hike in the Final Budget

Demands for Effective Price Hike in the Final Budget

Breaking News, National
The proposed national budget for FY 2023-24, if adopted, will once again render tobacco products cheaper than essential commodities. This will raise tobacco-related illness and deaths, deprive the government of the opportunity to earn additional revenue, and only benefit tobacco companies. Economists and anti-tobacco leaders have raised demand for introducing specific supplementary duty (SD) to effectively raise the prices of tobacco products in the final budget. Such issues have been discussed today (12 June 2023, Monday) during a post-budget press conference on tobacco price and tax measures, held at the Tofazzal Hossain Manik Mia auditorium of the press club, jointly organized by research and advocacy organization PROGGA (Knowledge for Progress) and Anti-tobacco Media Alliance (ATMA). ...

Implementation of trans-fat limiting regulation crucial to ensure food standards

Breaking News, National
There is no alternative to ensuring food standards to safeguard public health. Although the government has passed the “Controlling Trans-Fatty Acid in Foodstuffs Regulation 2021” to ensure trans-fat-free food, no progress has been noticed so far in terms of its implementation. Speedy implementation of the trans-fat limiting regulation is required to safeguard public health. Speakers highlighted this information at a webinar titled “Trans-fat in food and Heart Disease Risk: Way Forward”, organized by research and advocacy organization PROGGA (Knowledge for Progress) with support from Global Health Advocacy Incubator (GHA...

Youth Reaction on National Budget FY 2023-24: Context Tobacco Tax

Youth Reaction on National Budget FY 2023-24: Context Tobacco Tax

Breaking News, National
Although the price of tobacco products has been increased in the proposed budget, the youth feel that the rate of price increase is disappointing. They say that this budget is an obstacle to creating a tobacco-free young society and creating a tobacco-free country by 2040 as announced by the Prime Minister. Currently, 75 percent of the cigarette market is occupied by the lower level whose main consumers are mainly the poor and young people. A price hike of 50 paise per low-end cigarette will not discourage the poor and young population from taking up cigarettes. Because per capita income growth and price inflation are taken into account, cigarette prices have decreased in real terms compared to previous years. This will increase the consumption of cheap cigarettes at an alarming rate. A...
Budget to Increase Tobacco Use and Health Expenditure

Budget to Increase Tobacco Use and Health Expenditure

Breaking News, National
The proposed national budget for FY 2023-24, if adopted, will once again make tobacco products cheaper than essential commodities. It will encourage the youth into using tobacco products, increase tobacco-related deaths and illness, and therefore spike the public health expenditure of the government. The proposed budget, being at odds with the proposals of anti-tobacco activists, will cause the government to lose the chances of earning additional revenues and will also hinder the realization of a tobacco-free Bangladesh, as envisioned by the Honorable Prime Minister. The proposed budget has increased the prices of 10 sticks of low-tier cigarettes from BDT 40 to BDT 45, which shows an increase of only BDT 0.50 (12.50 percent) in the price per stick. As the budget has proposed to increase o...
