On the occasion of National Road Safety Day, youths have called for the swift enactment of the “Road Safety Act.” The demand was raised this morning by members of Ahsania Mission Youth for Health and Wellbeing while participating in the national program held in front of the Roads and Highways Department in Dhaka. They emphasized that young people are among the most vulnerable groups of road users, with road crashes being one of the leading causes of death among youth.

Theme and Observance
This year marks the ninth observance of National Road Safety Day in Bangladesh. The theme for 2025 is Standard Helmet and Safe Speed: Reduce Loss of Life and Property. The day was observed through rallies, discussions, and awareness activities organized jointly by the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA), the Roads and Highways Department, and the Road Transport and Highways Division.

Call for Immediate Legislation
During the national rally and discussion meeting, youths from Ahsania Mission Youth for Health and Wellbeing stressed the urgent need for a comprehensive Road Safety Law to ensure safer roads for all. They highlighted the importance of adopting a Safe System Approach that prioritizes speed management, responsible driving behavior, and strict enforcement of traffic laws.

They also noted that during the Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety held earlier this year in Morocco, the Government of Bangladesh pledged to enact the Road Safety Act by 2027 and to develop speed management and standard helmet usage guidelines by 2026. The participants urged the government to accelerate these commitments to prevent avoidable deaths and injuries.

Motorcycle Safety a Key Concern
Citing recent data, the youths expressed concern that a large portion of road crashes in Bangladesh involves motorcycles. Reckless speeding and unsafe riding behavior are among the primary causes. Reports indicate that nearly 43 percent of road crashes involve motorcycles, and about 90 percent occur due to speeding and negligence by drivers or riders.

In line with this year’s National Road Safety Day theme, the young participants reiterated their demand for the prompt formulation and enforcement of the Road Safety Act, along with the introduction of national speed management guidelines and stricter helmet-use standards.
