Veteran Freedom Fighter and ‘Bir Protik’ Mahbub Ahmed Shahid Laid to Rest with State Honors

The brave freedom fighter and recipient of the ‘Bir Protik’ title, Mahbub Ahmed Shahid, has passed away. He breathed his last at 4:30 PM on Friday, May 2, while undergoing treatment in the ICU of Kurmitola General Hospital (Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilaihi Raji’un). He was 71 years old at the time of his death, leaving behind a wife, a son, and a daughter.

During the 1971 Liberation War, Mahbub was a courageous fighter from Sector 2 under the ‘Crack Platoon’ in Dhaka. He served as the second-in-command of the ‘Maulana Shahid Group’ and led multiple high-risk guerrilla operations in Dhaka. Among the most notable operations under his command was the bombing at Habib Bank in Motijheel on October 19, 1971, conducted in broad daylight. This operation is remembered as an example of bravery and strategic success in the history of the Liberation War.

In recognition of his unparalleled courage and contributions to the motherland, the Government of Bangladesh awarded him the title of ‘Bir Protik’.

In his professional life, Mahbub Ahmed Shahid was the proprietor of Talent International Services and was involved in the indenting business for a long time. He also played an active role in social services. Recently, he served as the Cabinet Secretary and Treasurer of the Bangladesh Lions Foundation, District 315 A1.

His first funeral prayer was held on Friday night at the Jame Mosque in Block G of Bashundhara Residential Area. The second funeral prayer took place on Saturday after the Fajr prayer at the Jame Mosque in Nayapaltan. At 10:30 AM, the Dhaka District Administration honored him with a ‘Guard of Honor’ at the Azimpur graveyard. He was later laid to rest with state honors in the designated cemetery for freedom fighters at 11 AM.

His family has requested the nation to pray for the forgiveness of Mahbub Ahmed Shahid’s soul.
