Renowned for her meticulous craftsmanship in storytelling, Naznin Hasan Khan has directed a special seven-episode drama series titled Gonok, set to air during the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha. Penned by Rajib Moni Das, the series showcases a talented ensemble cast including A.K.M. Hasan, Moushumi Hamid, Ashraful Ashish, Fahmida Trisha, Masud Mohiuddin, Sayka Ahmed, Masud Rana Mithu, Sujat Shimul, Farid Hossain, and Riki Rafat.
Reflecting on the inspiration behind the production, director Naznin Hasan Khan remarked, “Our society is still deeply entangled in superstitions, particularly concerning palmistry and fortune-telling. With Gonok, we aimed to challenge these misguided beliefs through a narrative that is both engaging and thought-provoking. As always, our storyline diverges from the ordinary. I sincerely hope audiences find it both entertaining and enlightening.”
Scriptwriter Rajib Moni Das added, “At the end of a long, exhausting day, people crave meaningful entertainment. With that in mind, I conceived a comedic story that also mirrors the absurdities and realities of rural life. Gonok is just that — a tale rooted in our social fabric.”
The narrative centers on Aamir and Asma, a poor yet honest couple living in a remote village. Aamir, due to his weak memory and naive nature, fails at every task he undertakes. Asma supports the household by working in others’ homes, but her beauty attracts the unwelcome attention of morally compromised men in the village.
One night, Asma is frying pithas (rice cakes), and to her astonishment, Aamir correctly guesses the exact number without even looking. Intrigued, Asma begins to portray her husband as a man with supernatural foresight — a Gonok.
The story takes a dramatic turn when gold jewelry is stolen from the wealthy Munshi household. Asma, being the only maid there, becomes the primary suspect. Despite protesting her innocence, she is detained and humiliated. During the village council’s arbitration, Asma claims her husband is possessed by a jinn that reveals hidden truths.
With the alleged help of this mystical entity, the seemingly foolish Aamir identifies the true thief, Kalam. This astonishing revelation spreads across neighboring villages, and Aamir is quickly catapulted to fame as the village Gonok. His reputation skyrockets, bringing him both wealth and influence, transforming the once-inept villager into a widely respected — and feared — figure.
According to production sources, Gonok will premiere on a leading private satellite channel during Eid-ul-Azha.
