The name Michael Jackson continues to hold an irresistible appeal for millions of fans worldwide. More than just the “King of Pop,” he remains a ruler of hearts across generations. Even after his passing in 2009 at the age of 50, his popularity has not diminished—he still attracts around 65 million monthly listeners on Spotify. The fascination surrounding him has endured, both during his lifetime and after his death, as evidenced by the massive anticipation following the announcement of a biopic based on his life.
That long wait is finally coming to an end. The film Michael is set for international release on April 24, and in good news for Bangladeshi audiences, it will be released in the country on the same day at Star Cineplex.
Directed by Antoine Fuqua, the film stars Jaafar Jackson, Michael Jackson’s nephew, in the lead role. The cast also includes Miles Teller, Colman Domingo, Kat Graham, Nia Long, Laura Harrier, Kendrick Sampson, and Juliano Krue Valdi.
The film explores Michael Jackson’s life beyond music, tracing his journey from a young talent in the Jackson 5 to becoming the world’s biggest entertainment icon. Audiences will get an intimate look at his life off stage as well as the golden moments of his solo career—right from where it all began.
Key figures in his life are also portrayed in the film. Colman Domingo plays his father Joe Jackson, while Nia Long portrays his mother Katherine Jackson. His sister La Toya Jackson is played by Jessica Sula. The film also features influential figures from the music industry, including Berry Gordy, founder of Motown Records, music executive Suzanne de Passe, and Diana Ross—highlighting their roles in shaping Michael’s career.
Michael’s journey began as the lead vocalist of the Jackson 5 in his childhood, gradually evolving into a global superstar as a solo artist. This biopic promises to reveal many untold stories of his life, along with recreations of some of his most iconic performances.
For Michael Jackson fans, the film is undoubtedly a major event. The trailer alone suggests that the filmmakers have aimed to capture his music, dance, and extraordinary rise to stardom with grandeur. The teaser, released last November, reportedly broke records by garnering 116.2 million views within 24 hours—a milestone unprecedented for a musical biopic teaser. The trailer has also generated huge interest, crossing 5 million views within a day of its release in February.
Analysts believe that Michael is poised for strong commercial success upon release. According to Mesbah Uddin Ahmed, AGM of Media & Marketing at Star Cineplex, the film is expected to create significant buzz in Bangladesh as well. He noted that Michael Jackson continues to be immensely popular among Bangladeshi audiences—from the 80s and 90s to the present day—and that there is already strong interest, with many viewers inquiring about advance tickets. He expressed optimism that the film will resonate deeply with audiences.
