
Helen LaFave, U.S. Chargé d’Affaires, and her accompanying delegation paid a courtesy call on the CHT Affairs Adviser, Supradip Chakma, at his office today. The delegation included the Political Counselor, Director of USAID, HR Officer, and other officials.
The U.S. team expressed their appreciation for the meeting. During their discussion, they highlighted the existing relationship between Bangladesh and the USA, focusing on their cooperation in the CHT (Chittagong Hill Tracts) for livelihood development and environmental initiatives. They also discussed future cooperation in the CHT, recent communal violence that took place from 18-20 September 2024, the human rights situation, and other related issues.
In welcoming the U.S. Embassy team, Adviser Chakma emphasized the objectives of the Interim Government, which have gained momentum with the recent student movement. He stressed the ongoing reform policies of the Interim Government, aimed at eliminating all forms of discrimination and promoting human rights protection for all, based on equality and justice.
The Adviser also highlighted his efforts to build a harmonious society in the CHT, focusing on socio-economic, health, education, and cultural development for every individual. In response to the Embassy team, he expressed hope for a future where the CHT would achieve social indicators comparable to other parts of Bangladesh. He emphasized the region’s massive potential in horticulture, agriculture, fisheries, and eco-tourism, provided there is good governance, a harmonious society with justice and equality, and affirmative action to uplift the backward communities of the hill.
The Adviser recommended further cooperation in quality education, livelihood development, health, and especially environmental conservation. He was accompanied by the Secretary, the Additional Secretary (Development), and other officials during the meeting.
