Robi Axiata PLC has launched a pioneering initiative to distribute smart canes among visually impaired individuals, reaffirming its commitment to digital inclusion and social empowerment. The initiative, marking World White Cane Safety Day, aims to enhance mobility, safety, and independence through access to innovative assistive technology.
The event was held on Thursday at Robi’s Corporate Office in Dhaka, attended by Shahed Alam, Chief Corporate and Regulatory Officer, Robi Axiata PLC; Sharif Shah Jamal Raz, Director, Public Affairs and Sustainability, Robi Axiata PLC; and Ridwan Hossain, Chief Executive Officer, Drishti Technologies Limited, along with other senior officials.
Developed by Drishti Technologies, the Abhash Smart Cane integrates sonar-based obstacle detection, haptic feedback, and audio alerts, enabling users to navigate confidently and safely. With over four million visually impaired people in Bangladesh, many face challenges in mobility, education, and employment. This initiative by Robi aims to bridge these gaps by making assistive innovation more accessible to those who need it most.

This device will enhance the safety and independence of visually impaired individuals, empowering them to live with greater confidence.”
The Smart Cane Distribution Program is being implemented in collaboration with seven partner organizations: Ispahani Islamia Eye Institute and Hospital, Visually Impaired People’s Society (VIPS), Real View, Blind Education and Rehabilitation Development Organization (BERDO), Doors of Inclusive Society (DIS), Nohor Initiatives, and Sporsho Foundation.
Through this initiative, Robi continues to strengthen its vision of “Empowering Communities through Connectivity and Innovation”, using technology as a bridge to inclusion and empowerment for all.
