BRAC Bank and the Economic Relations Division (ERD) of the Ministry of Finance jointly organised a three-day climate finance training programme to strengthen public-private collaboration in mobilising sustainable investment climate resilience in Bangladesh.

The programme, titled “Upskilling Multisectoral Professionals as Climate Investment Catalysts: Navigating Climate Science, Policies and Finance,” brought together representatives from ten banks, six government ministries, civil society organisations and academia to build the knowledge and practical skills required to develop and finance climate-resilient projects.

Md. Shahriar Kader Siddiky, Secretary, Economic Relations Division, Ministry of Finance, inaugurated the programme as Chief Guest at the Planning Commission in Agargaon, Dhaka, on June 14, 2026. Nurun Nahar, Deputy Governor, Bangladesh Bank; Tareq Refat Ullah Khan, Managing Director & CEO of BRAC Bank; and AKM Sohel, Additional Secretary, ERD, Ministry of Finance; were present.

Speakers at the inaugural ceremony highlighted that achieving climate ambitions will require stronger partnerships between government, regulators, financial institutions, development partners and the private sector. They emphasised that mobilising climate finance depends not only on policy support but also on building institutional capacity and developing bankable, investment-ready projects.

Speaking at the inauguration, Tareq Refat Ullah Khan, Managing Director & CEO of BRAC Bank, said, “Climate resilience requires more than capital; it requires professionals who can transform climate priorities into bankable investment opportunities. Strong collaboration between the public and private sectors will be essential to mobilise the scale of financing needed for a sustainable future.”

He added that sustainability remains integral to BRAC Bank’s business strategy, with 9% of the Bank’s portfolio dedicated to green finance and 83% to sustainable finance in 2025.

The training covered climate science, national and global policy frameworks, climate finance mechanisms – including the Green Climate Fund and Adaptation Fund and practical approaches to structuring and financing climate projects.

The programme concluded with a closing session on June 16, 2026 attended by AKM Sohel, Additional Secretary, ERD, Ministry of Finance, and Ahmed Rashid Joy, Additional Managing Director & Chief Risk Officer, BRAC Bank. Discussions focused on strengthening the policy environment, expanding climate-related financial instruments, and creating greater incentives to attract private investment into green and resilient infrastructure.

The capacity building initiative reflects the shared commitment of the Government of Bangladesh and BRAC Bank to accelerating climate finance through stronger institutional collaboration, enhanced professional capacity, and innovative financing solutions that support the country’s long-term sustainable development goals.
